Norway spruce Picea abies
Also know as: European spruce
P. abies is a tall, conical spruce tree native to alpine and northern Europe, and extensively planted (and largely naturalized) in North America. In its natural range, trees can grow up to 60 m tall and live 300-400 years. The species prefers acidic, sandy, well-drained soils. In its natural range, it occurs in pure, transitional, and mixed stands. It is one of the most commercially important species in northern Europe and Scandinavia.
Wood is strong, soft, straight- and fine-grained. It is easily worked and is used in construction, pulp and paper production, furniture, and musical instruments, where it is used as a tonewood. Norway spruce is also very popular as a Christmas tree in countries where it is grown.
