Illegal Timber Tracking: Leveraging the outdoor community to stop timber theft
Hosted by the Adventure Scientists
Time: 12:00 to 1:00 pm EDT
The legality of timber products is not immediately apparent. Genetic, and chemical identification technologies can improve transparency in global supply chains by helping authorities identify the species and harvest location of questionably sourced or managed lumber. Currently, the greatest challenge is the lack of sufficient reference libraries of verified samples from standing trees around the world. Adventure Scientists will share how, in partnership with the US Forest Service, our network of outdoor adventurers have been building these critical reference libraries over the past 5 years across 4 species' ranges, including a 5th launching this summer.
- Lindsay Wancour, Adventure Scientists (moderator)
- Joshua Theurer, Adventure Scientists

Bringing science-based traceability to forest-connected supply chains
Hosted by the World Forest ID
Time: 1:00 to 2:00 pm EDT
Tackling global deforestation requires that the actors involved in global supply chains have the means to accurately verify the identity and geographic source of both timber and deforestation-related agricultural commodities. This event will share with participants how World Forest ID is the critical missing piece to bring these technologies to scale. Participants will learn more about the work of World Forest ID, the science behind and application of these technologies, and how participants can become involved in building the world’s most valuable treasure map.
- Meaghan Parker-Forney, WRI (Moderator)
- Phil Guillery, Executive Director, World Forest ID
- Victor Deklerck, Research Team Leader, World Forest ID-Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
- Emily Crumley, African and Eastern Europe Lead, FSC
- Marysol Jaime-Arteaga, Latin America World Forest ID Program Manager, US Forest Service - International Programs
